Keto Meal Plan for Kidney Stone Prevention on a Low-Carb Diet

Kidney stones are a concern for some keto practitioners, particularly those following therapeutic (very high fat) versions of the diet. With smart dietary choices, this risk can be significantly minimised.

Types of Kidney Stones and Keto Risk

Uric acid stones: risk slightly elevated on keto due to temporary uric acid increase during adaptation. Calcium oxalate stones (the most common type): risk depends on oxalate intake and hydration, not specifically keto. Calcium phosphate stones: not specifically keto-related.

Prevention Strategy 1: Hydration Above All

Drink at least 2.5 litres of water daily. Higher urine output dramatically reduces stone formation risk for all stone types.

Prevention Strategy 2: Limit High-Oxalate Foods

Spinach, almonds, and beet greens are high in oxalate. Rotation rather than elimination: eat varied vegetables rather than spinach every day.

Prevention Strategy 3: Maintain Alkaline Urine

Include base-forming foods (leafy greens, citrus juice in small amounts) to maintain urine pH above 5.5, reducing uric acid crystal formation.
