CoQ10 and Keto: Supporting Cellular Energy and Heart Health
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, or ubiquinol in its reduced form) is an essential molecule in the mitochondrial electron transport chain — the core process of cellular energy production. For keto dieters, it deserves serious attention.
What CoQ10 Does
CoQ10 shuttles electrons between complexes in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, enabling ATP production. It is also a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and LDL from oxidative damage.
Statins and CoQ10 Depletion
Statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) inhibit the mevalonate pathway, which produces both cholesterol and CoQ10. People taking statins often have significantly reduced CoQ10 levels, contributing to the muscle pain (myalgia) that is statins’ most common side effect.
Keto and CoQ10
The increased mitochondrial demand of fat oxidation on keto may increase CoQ10 requirements. The heart, which runs almost entirely on fatty acids, is particularly dependent on CoQ10.
Dosing
100–300mg ubiquinol daily with a fatty meal (fat-soluble). People on statins should discuss CoQ10 supplementation with their GP.
